Aluminum and vinyl are both available in impact-window systems, but the frame material alone does not tell you which product belongs in a South Florida opening.

The responsible comparison is between two exact, approved assemblies: their sizes, impact classification, positive and negative pressures, glass options, whole-product energy ratings, installation conditions, finish, maintenance, warranty, lead time, and installed scope.

Start with the whole window, not a material stereotype

It is common to hear “aluminum is stronger” or “vinyl is more efficient.” Those statements describe broad material tendencies, not the performance of the units in your quote.

The U.S. Department of Energy notes that aluminum is strong and light but conducts heat readily; a thermal break can reduce heat flow. It describes vinyl frames as moisture resistant and made with UV stabilizers. DOE also recommends evaluating the complete window, including frame, glazing, gas fills, spacers, and operation.

For impact resistance and wind pressure, use the product approval. For energy, use the NFRC label. For appearance and operation, review samples and drawings. Each document answers a different question.

Aluminum impact-window frames

Aluminum can support narrow-looking profiles and is widely used in residential and commercial fenestration. Exact sightlines and maximum sizes still vary by series and configuration.

When comparing aluminum products, ask:

  • Does the frame use a thermal break?
  • What are the whole-window U-factor and solar heat gain coefficient for the specified glass?
  • What finish and pretreatment are used, and what coastal cleaning schedule applies?
  • Which fasteners and hardware are compatible with the frame and exposure?
  • Are the proposed size, mullions, reinforcement, and pressures within the approval?
  • What does the finish warranty exclude near saltwater?

Do not assume a dark finish, slim profile, or commercial appearance proves any performance rating.

Vinyl impact-window frames

Vinyl frames have internal chambers and can include reinforcement where the design requires it. They generally conduct less heat than unbroken aluminum, but the whole-product rating remains the useful comparison.

For vinyl options, ask:

  • What reinforcement is included at the proposed size and pressure?
  • How do frame dimensions affect visible glass and interior trim?
  • Which colors are integral, laminated, painted, or otherwise finished?
  • What do the product documents say about dark colors, exposure, and maximum size?
  • How do expansion details, anchorage, and shimming differ for the approved installation?
  • What maintenance and cleaning products are allowed?

“Vinyl” is not one profile or formula. Compare the exact series rather than applying a generic expectation to every manufacturer.

Side-by-side decision table

Decision factor Aluminum questions Vinyl questions
Structural fit Approved size, reinforcement, mullions, DP, frame section Approved size, reinforcement, mullions, DP, frame section
Thermal fit Thermal break and whole-window NFRC ratings Whole-window NFRC ratings and specified reinforcement
Sightlines Actual frame and meeting-rail dimensions Actual frame and meeting-rail dimensions
Finish Coating, color, exposure, cleaning, warranty Integral or applied color, exposure, cleaning, warranty
Coastal care Salt-removal schedule and compatible materials Salt-removal schedule and compatible materials
Installation Approved anchors, spacing, substrate, sealant strategy Approved anchors, spacing, substrate, sealant strategy
Budget Product, glass, finish, labor, lead time, trim Product, glass, finish, labor, lead time, trim

The same property may reasonably use different configurations in different openings. A large fixed opening, a bedroom egress window, and a small bathroom window do not impose identical design or operating priorities.

Compare energy performance correctly

DOE’s window technology guide explains why frame, glass, coatings, gas fills, spacers, and operation all affect energy performance.

Use these whole-product values:

  • U-factor: rate of non-solar heat transfer; lower is generally better.
  • Solar heat gain coefficient: fraction of solar heat admitted; lower reduces solar gain, though daylight and appearance also matter.
  • Visible transmittance: fraction of visible light admitted.
  • Air leakage: air passage under stated test conditions.

Our energy-efficient impact-window guide explains how to compare those labels in South Florida. Do not compare glass-only values from one quote with whole-window values from another.

Compare structural and approval limits correctly

Search the exact series in the Florida Product Approval portal or applicable Miami-Dade records. Then match the proposal to:

  • unit type and configuration;
  • exact width and height;
  • impact level and limits of use;
  • positive and negative design pressures;
  • glass makeup and reinforcement;
  • mullion combination, if any;
  • frame type and attachment method;
  • anchor, substrate, edge distance, embedment, and spacing.

Review our design-pressure rating guide before comparing a single “DP” headline from two products.

Coastal durability depends on details and care

Salt and moisture exposure affect more than the primary frame material. Hardware, fasteners, screens, finishes, dissimilar-metal contact, sealants, weatherstripping, and drainage paths deserve attention.

Request the manufacturer’s coastal-care instructions before purchase. Ask how often exterior surfaces and tracks should be rinsed, which cleaners are prohibited, what hardware service is expected, and what records the warranty requires.

Our impact-window maintenance guide provides a general routine. The manufacturer instructions for the ordered product control.

A better way to request competing quotes

Give bidders the same opening schedule and ask them to identify:

  1. manufacturer, series, material, color, and frame type;
  2. window configuration, dimensions, glass, screens, and hardware;
  3. approval reference, impact class, and design pressures;
  4. NFRC values for the exact glass and frame combination;
  5. mullions, reinforcements, anchors, substrate, and installation method;
  6. removal, disposal, permits, inspections, protection, sealants, trim, stucco, and paint;
  7. product and installation warranties;
  8. lead time and exclusions.

Then use our impact-window cost guide to compare scope instead of only the bottom-line price.

The practical choice

Choose the aluminum or vinyl assembly that satisfies the opening’s documented requirements and your priorities for appearance, operation, energy, maintenance, warranty, availability, and budget. There is no responsible material-only answer.
